Family Balancing

IVF Plano Provides Dallas Area Patients with Family Balancing Fertility Treatment Options

As an experienced fertility specialist, Dr. James Douglas assists patients in their quests to begin or expand their families. Using the latest techniques in reproductive technology, Dr. Douglas identifies and treats common causes of infertility. Additionally, IVF Plano helps individuals and couples with specific goals such as family balancing through sex selection.

Dr. Douglas Explains the Basics of Gender and Biology

To conceive a child, a sperm must fertilize the female’s egg. Human eggs contain one X chromosome, but sperm contains either an X or a Y chromosome. When an X-bearing sperm fertilizes the egg, the fetus is a girl; subsequently, a boy is conceived when a Y-bearing sperm fertilizes the egg. Generally, the odds are about 50 percent for conceiving a male child and 50 percent for conceiving a female child.

Why Patients Choose Family Balancing

If a family has one or more child of a certain gender, they may wish to balance or complete their family with a child of the opposite sex. Through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) combined with specialized testing, Dr. Douglas uses family balancing to help patients achieve the desired outcome.

The 411 on an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Cycle

If you choose family balancing, Dr. Douglas will utilize the standard IVF procedure to help you conceive a child. To begin, Dr. Douglas will prescribe medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs and monitor your progress through blood work and sonograms. On the day of egg retrieval, your partner will provide a sperm sample. In the laboratory, our skilled embryologists will fertilize the eggs with sperm to produce embryos.

How Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) Assists with Family Balancing Goals

Capture45With preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), we can identify the gender of the embryo before conception and select only embryos of the appropriate sex during the transfer process. For this process, the embryologist takes the fertilized embryos from the incubator on Day 5 and skillfully removes a single cell from each embryo for testing. The genetic material from each individual embryo is evaluated to assess the sex. Dr. Douglas will then transfer only the embryos of the desired gender.
