Now that 2014 has arrived, many folks will make their New Year’s resolutions. If you’re focusing on fertility this year, Dr. James Douglas with IVF Plano suggests that you make (and keep) the following resolutions:
“I will lessen my stress.” Stress throws your hormones out of balance, creates muscle tension and generally puts your body into a “fight or flight” mode — not exactly ideal circumstances for enhancing fertility. The struggle to conceive in and of itself can produce emotional stress. Resolve to try such stress-busting techniques as massage, acupuncture and yoga, and surround yourself with supportive, caring friends.
“I will eat right and take my supplements.” A balanced diet and proper nutrition will optimize your body’s various functions, including its reproductive system. Women and men alike will want to supplement their diets with folic acid, a B vitamin necessary for fertility.
“I will help my partner maintain proper health.” Unless you’re making use of donor sperm or eggs, it takes two to tango, and you’ll need a fit dance partner. Is your significant other eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep and making efforts to curb unwanted stress? Resolve to support your partner’s fertility optimization efforts as well as your own.
“I will give up smoking.” Smoking can have a significant impact on your ability to conceive; it affects sperm count, sperm cell motility and egg quality, estrogen production and ovarian health — not to mention elevating your risk for cancer, including reproductive cancers. Smokers are always claiming that they’ll quit “someday,” but if you want to get pregnant, that day is now.
Just One More Thing…
